Laurell K. Hamilton was born Laurell Kaye Klein on February 19, 1963, in Heber Springs, Arkansas, and was raised in Sims, Indiana, by her grandmother, Laura Gentry. She earned degrees in English and biology from Marion College, now Indiana Wesleyan University. Writing professionally since 1993, Hamilton has worked across fantasy, erotica, romance, horror, and science fiction, and is best known for creating two long-running series. Her Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series, beginning with Guilty Pleasures, follows a professional zombie raiser and vampire executioner who also serves as a supernatural police consultant; by 2013 the series comprised twenty-two novels and five novellas, with six million copies in print. Her Merry Gentry series centers on a princess of the Unseelie court working as a private investigator, reaching nine novels by 2014. Hamilton's editor for much of her career was Susan Allison at Penguin Group. Major publications have credited her with helping establish the modern urban fantasy genre; Time magazine wrote in 2008 that the genre's popularity 'owes everything to Laurell K. Hamilton.'
