Synopsis

Hit List is the twentieth novel in the Anita Blake series. Federal marshals Anita Blake and Edward travel to the Pacific Northwest to investigate a string of serial killings, initially treating it as a conventional, if brutal, murder case. As they dig deeper, they realize the killings bear the hallmarks of the Harlequin, a centuries-old order of vampire assassins who serve the Mother of All Darkness, the first vampire ever made and a being long believed destroyed. Edward comes to suspect that the murders are in fact bait, deliberately laid to draw Anita into a direct confrontation with this ancient power, who is said to be searching for a new body to inhabit and has fixed her attention on Anita herself. The two marshals must untangle the Harlequin's methods and motives while treating the mounting human casualties as anything but incidental.
