Synopsis
Rafael is the twenty-eighth entry in the Anita Blake series, a novella centered on Rafael, the king of the wererats and a longtime ally of Anita Blake. Rafael's rule is challenged by a younger, ambitious rival named Hector, who seeks to seize the wererat throne through a formal combat challenge. Internal dissent among the wererats compounds the danger, as some within the group resent how heavily Rafael has come to rely on Anita, a necromancer and federal marshal, and on the political and magical support of Jean-Claude's vampire court. Rafael asks Anita to stand with him as the confrontation approaches, drawing her directly into wererat politics. As the two prepare for the coming fight, unsettling signs emerge that Hector's challenge may not be as straightforward as it appears, with a powerful outside vampire's influence suspected of working against Rafael from behind the scenes.
