Synopsis
Darknesses follows Alucius, now recognized as the militia's youngest captain, as he tries and fails to settle back into a quiet life as a rancher after his escape from captivity in the first novel. Fresh threats to Corus soon force him back into active service, this time against a new conqueror leading the Horsemen of the Plains, an army bent on rebuilding an ancient empire that was destroyed centuries earlier by magical catastrophe. As the invaders unleash sorcerous attacks that outmatch conventional defenses, Alucius comes to understand that his combination of military skill and hidden Talent may be one of the few things standing between Corus and conquest.
