Synopsis
In this 1998 novel, in a world governed by the Blood, a matriarchal society whose members draw magical power from ranked, colored Jewels, Jaenelle Angelline is a young girl whose true nature is hidden from almost everyone around her. She is, unknown to most, the prophesied Witch -- a being of living darkness said to be born once in an age, capable of wielding the rarest and most dangerous Jewels. Because her power is so far beyond what anyone expects from a child, she is dismissed as delusional or fanciful by the adults meant to care for her, leaving her vulnerable to those who would exploit or destroy what they cannot control.
