Overview

Black Jewels is Anne Bishop's dark fantasy world of Kaeleer, Terreille, and Hell, where power is measured by the color of jewel a witch or warlord wears, ranging from the common White up through the rare, darker stones that mark the greatest strength. It began with a single trilogy, Daughter of the Blood (1998), Heir to the Shadows (1999), and Queen of the Darkness (2000), following Jaenelle, a girl whose immense, still-developing power draws the protective attention of three of the realms' most dangerous men as a corrupt ruling class works to destroy her before she can grow into it. The trilogy's frank treatment of abuse, corruption, and sexual violence within its aristocratic power structure set it apart from much contemporaneous fantasy, and it has grown since into many further novels and story collections set across the same three linked realms, exploring different corners of Kaeleer's court politics and its Blood hierarchy in the years before and after the original trilogy's events.
