Overview
Julian May's science fantasy saga: exiles from a future human Galactic Milieu flee six million years into Earth's past through a one-way time gate, into a Pliocene Epoch already home to two warring exiled alien races (the Tanu and Firvulag) whose power-based hierarchy and culture read as classic fantasy elf/troll iconography even though the underlying explanation is science-fictional.

Expanded = Intervention (1987), the connecting novel explicitly built by the author as a bridge, and the later Galactic Milieu Trilogy (Jack the Bodiless, Diamond Mask, Magnificat, 1991–1996), set generations earlier in-universe. Precedent: admitted as epic fantasy on the same basis already applied to Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover, both similarly science-fantasy. Note: The Adversary shares its title with an unrelated Forgotten Realms book already in this canon; confirmed as a genuine unrelated-title collision, not a duplicate.
