Synopsis

Spanning the years from just after World War II into an increasingly turbulent future, this novel follows several generations of the Remillard family of New Hampshire as certain members begin manifesting extraordinary mental abilities. Twin brothers Rogi and Don first notice unusual gifts, but it is Don's children, especially Denis, who develop far greater metapsychic powers; Denis goes on to found and quietly direct a secret community of similarly gifted humans working to steer the course of human history. Unbeknownst to nearly everyone, Earth itself is under discreet observation by an advanced galactic civilization weighing humanity's fitness to join a wider interstellar society. Tension escalates when another family member conspires with a criminal figure toward personal power, forcing Denis to organize his community's mental resources in response, in events that ultimately draw the watching aliens into the open.
