Synopsis

The concluding volume of the Galactic Milieu Trilogy follows the increasingly ambitious Marc Remillard, one of the most powerful metapsychic operants alive, as he pursues a secretive project called Mental Man, intended to engineer a new human subspecies with enhanced mental powers. He also develops devices that amplify metapsychic ability, technology the governing Galactic Concilium considers far too dangerous to permit. As his plans grow bolder, Marc aligns himself with a faction of humans who resist joining Unity, the deeper communion offered by the Milieu's alien races, fearing the loss of human individuality and privacy. Meanwhile, the wider Remillard family confronts the shocking discovery that the respected family patriarch Denis has been possessed by the parasitic entity Fury, and moves to free him, with consequences that ripple through the family and the growing standoff between pro-Unity and rebel forces.

Notes

  • From the series record (Galactic Milieu Trilogy): Same universe as Saga of Pliocene Exile, set generations earlier in-universe (near-future Earth, before the time-gate exiles); the author's own connective structure links it to the core tetralogy via Intervention.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Galactic Milieu Trilogy: position 3 of 3: previous Diamond Mask (1994)
  • Internal chronology, within Saga of Pliocene Exile: position 6 of 7: previous The Nonborn King (1983) · next The Adversary (1984)
