Synopsis
The second book of the Galactic Milieu Trilogy centers on Dorothea 'Diamond' MacDonald, a young woman living on the Scottish colony world of Caledonia. When her family is attacked by Hydra, an assassin construct controlled by the malevolent entity Fury, Dorothea's latent metapsychic abilities are violently awakened, and she discovers she possesses power on the rare Paramount level. As she comes into her own as one of the Milieu's most formidable operants, she and fellow Paramount Jack Remillard work together, including collaborating to avert a catastrophic volcanic eruption threatening an entire world. The ordeal leaves Dorothea with facial scarring that she conceals, giving rise to the 'Diamond Mask' identity by which she becomes known. The novel continues the trilogy's exploration of humanity's uneasy integration into the wider galactic community.
