Synopsis

The Nonborn King is the third book of the Saga of Pliocene Exile, continuing the political and military struggles among humans and the alien Tanu in the Pliocene past. In the aftermath of the catastrophic flooding that reshaped the region at the close of the previous novel, the balance of power among Tanu, Firvulag, and the human exiles is thrown into disarray. The book introduces Marc Remillard, an immensely powerful human whose ambitions and hidden agenda set him apart from the other exiles and mark him as a figure the established order has reason to fear. As various factions try to consolidate control over the changed landscape, alliances shift and old loyalties are tested, with Remillard's growing influence emerging as a destabilizing force that the rest of the saga's characters must reckon with.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Saga of Pliocene Exile: position 3 of 4: previous The Golden Torc (1982) · next The Adversary (1984)
