Synopsis
The second novel in Ian C. Esslemont's Path to Ascendancy prequel trilogy finds Kellanved and his partner Dancer washing up, nearly penniless, on the small and unremarkable island of Malaz. There Kellanved sets about plotting to seize control of the island by forging an alliance with a band of exiled Napan warriors who have their own reasons for wanting a foothold, all while becoming increasingly fixated on a mysterious, sentient ancient structure on the island known only as the Deadhouse, whose true nature he is determined to uncover no matter the risk it poses to himself, to Dancer, or to their new island allies.
