Synopsis
This novel follows Piemur, a journeyman harper who has been displaced from his usual duties and is sent undercover among the exiled Oldtimers to gather intelligence on a growing threat to Pern's stability. As tensions escalate between rival groups of dragonriders, the story builds toward the unprecedented and alarming possibility of dragons being turned against other dragons, a first in the planet's history. Piemur must navigate divided loyalties and hidden agendas among the Oldtimers while trying to uncover the truth behind the looming conflict before it spirals out of control. The novel takes place concurrently with earlier, established events in the Pern timeline, filling in details of the political maneuvering happening behind the scenes as the Oldtimers' exile reaches a breaking point.
