Synopsis

Dragonbreath introduces Danny Dragonbreath, the only dragon attending a school otherwise populated by reptiles and amphibians, who is mocked by classmates because, unlike the dragons of legend, he has not yet learned to breathe fire. Struggling with schoolwork and stuck writing a report on ocean life, Danny turns to his sea-serpent cousin Edward for help, and Edward offers to take him and his best friend, an iguana named Wendell, on a real trip beneath the waves rather than let them rely on a library book. The underwater excursion quickly turns into more than either of them bargained for, as the trio encounters a series of bizarre sea creatures and lands in escalating trouble far from the safety of dry land. The story is told through a mix of comic-style illustrated panels and traditional prose narration, a hybrid format that became a hallmark of the series.

Notes

  • From the series record (Dragonbreath): Eleven-volume illustrated middle-grade chapter-book series (Dial Books, 2009-2016) following Danny Dragonbreath, a talking dragon attending a school otherwise full of reptiles and amphibians, whose comic misadventures regularly involve genuine magical creatures and events (fairies, were-creatures, ghosts, curses). Author-illustrated throughout; every volume mixes prose chapters with full-page comic-style illustrated sequences. Confirmed traditionally published from first release, not web-serialized.
