T. Kingfisher is the pen name used by American author Ursula Vernon, born May 28, 1977, in Japan to a military family, and raised in Oregon and Arizona, for her fiction aimed at adult readers; she chose the Kingfisher pseudonym as an homage to author Ursula K. Le Guin, to avoid confusing parents familiar with her children's work under her own name. Vernon studied anthropology at Macalester College in Minnesota, where she first took art classes, and gained early recognition through webcomics featuring anthropomorphic animals, including the graphic novel Digger, before moving into children's book illustration and writing in 2008 with series such as Dragonbreath and Hamster Princess. Writing as Kingfisher, she has published adult fantasy including Nettle & Bone, Thornhedge, and the Paladin's Grace series, as well as horror novels such as The Twisted Ones, The Hollow Places, and What Moves the Dead, and has won three Hugo Awards -- for the novel Nettle & Bone, the novella Thornhedge, and the graphic novel Digger -- along with a Nebula Award for her short story Jackalope Wives, multiple Mythopoeic Awards, and additional World Fantasy, British Fantasy, Dragon, and Locus awards. Her artwork The Biting Pear of Salamanca became the internet meme LOL WUT pear. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2023 and was declared cancer-free by December 2023.
