Synopsis

Harriet the Invincible opens with Princess Harriet Hamsterbone, a rodent royal who has no interest in traditional princess duties, learning at age ten that a fairy cursed her at birth to fall into a deathlike sleep on her twelfth birthday after pricking her paw on a hamster wheel. Rather than despairing, Harriet reasons that since the curse can only take effect while she is alive, she is effectively invincible until the day it strikes, and she spends the two years leading up to her birthday throwing herself into reckless adventures, including cliff-diving and dragon-slaying, accompanied by her riding quail, Mumfrey. Her fearless approach to the looming curse sets the tone for the series as she treats what should be a terrifying fate as an excuse for daring exploits rather than caution.

Notes

  • From the series record (Hamster Princess): A completed six-book illustrated middle-grade fairy-tale-parody series about Harriet Hamsterbone, a hamster princess cursed at birth to prick her finger on a hamster wheel and die, who instead treats the curse as a loophole to seek out danger. Confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from Ursula Vernon's own Dragonbreath (a different illustrated middle-grade series) and from her adult work published as T. Kingfisher.
