Overview
A 2023 standalone Sleeping Beauty retelling: Toadling, a toad-like changeling raised by frog-folk in Faerie, has spent centuries guarding a tower she sealed with thorns, hiding the truth of who is really sleeping inside and why. When a wandering knight starts picking away at the thorns, she has to decide whether to stop him or finally let the story end. T. Kingfisher's novella reframes the familiar fairy tale from the perspective of the "fairy godmother" figure rather than the princess or prince, foregrounding the guilt and exhaustion of centuries spent maintaining a curse whose original purpose has become morally murky with hindsight. A quiet, melancholy fairy tale about guilt, duty, and the cost of a spell gone wrong, Thornhedge was a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy and British Fantasy Awards in 2024, a strong multi-award slate for a single novella-length work.
