Synopsis

No Such Thing as Ghosts, the fifth Dragonbreath book, opens with Danny Dragonbreath and his friend Wendell having worked out what they consider an optimal strategy for maximizing candy on Halloween night. Their carefully laid plans are disrupted when Danny's father insists the pair bring along Christiana Vanderpool, a rigid skeptic who scoffs at the very idea of dragons and other supposedly mythical creatures. When the school bully dares the group to explore a mansion rumored to be haunted, they reluctantly agree, expecting to find nothing but cobwebs and prove the dare pointless. Instead they discover the house's supernatural reputation is entirely deserved, encountering genuine otherworldly inhabitants, including an especially unsettling clown, and are forced to reconsider everything Christiana was so sure of.

Notes

  • From the series record (Dragonbreath): Eleven-volume illustrated middle-grade chapter-book series (Dial Books, 2009-2016) following Danny Dragonbreath, a talking dragon attending a school otherwise full of reptiles and amphibians, whose comic misadventures regularly involve genuine magical creatures and events (fairies, were-creatures, ghosts, curses). Author-illustrated throughout; every volume mixes prose chapters with full-page comic-style illustrated sequences. Confirmed traditionally published from first release, not web-serialized.
