Synopsis
Set during the winter weeks after the start of the Third Pass, this novel finds Pern still recovering from a plague that killed many holders and craftspeople roughly fifteen years earlier. Fiona, the only surviving child of a Lord Holder at Fort Weyr, unexpectedly impresses the gold dragon Talenth and is thrust into a leadership role during a widening crisis. A new illness begins striking fire lizards and then dragons themselves, even as deadly Threadfall continues, leaving Fiona and the rest of Pern facing the terrifying possibility that no dragons will survive to defend the planet. As losses mount from both the sickness and Thread, Fiona and a mysterious fellow rider are driven to a desperate and unconventional plan involving the injured dragons and young weyrlings in hopes of saving the Weyrs from disappearing altogether.
