Synopsis
In sixteenth-century Andalusia, after the Reconquista, Sinan grows up in Granada with his twin sister Rufaida. Their family are Muslims who converted to Catholicism out of necessity, and their father is violent toward the children. To escape the Inquisition, the family sends the twins to Montpellier. They arrive in a France torn apart by the Wars of Religion, where they meet Calvinists fighting for the right to worship freely. Rufaida wants to become a doctor but, as a woman, can only train as a surgeon-barber. Sinan, who will later be known as the assassin Silas, tells his story in short chapters. Their tutor also speaks of a magical stone, and the siblings begin to search for it, in a world where magic exacts a heavy price.
