Synopsis
In the eighth Peter Grant novel, Peter, newly a father-to-be and on leave from the Metropolitan Police, takes a civilian job at the Serious Cybernetics Company, a Silicon Valley-style technology startup in London founded by the entrepreneur Terrence Skinner, expecting the work to be a calmer change of pace from his usual supernatural casework. He soon finds that magic has followed him into the office, centering on a mysterious device connected to the historical legacies of Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage, whose origins stretch far back into the history of computation while pointing toward unsettling possibilities for the future of artificial intelligence.
