Synopsis
The sixth Valdemar anthology gathers fifteen original stories from guest authors alongside Mercedes Lackey, who created and continues to oversee the shared world of Heralds bonded to telepathic Companions. Lackey and co-author Larry Dixon contribute an original novella, while other contributors, including Tanya Huff, Mickey Zucker Reichert, Fiona Patton, Judith Tarr, Rosemary Edghill, and Elisabeth Waters, add independent tales of their own. The stories cover a range of situations: a Herald who apprehends bandits terrorizing the countryside but suffers an unexpected loss in the moment of victory, an unusual gift given to the capital by an unlikely source, a foreign assassin's wife who bonds with the Queen, and a dying Healer and a failed Chosen who find a way to heal together and carry on. As with earlier volumes, there is no single overarching plot.
