Synopsis

For Love of Evil tells the story of Parry, an orphan raised and trained in white magic by a wizard father figure, who marries a woman named Jolie and finds brief happiness before Christian crusaders attack, killing his father and capturing Jolie. Parry manages to rescue his wife, but she dies of her wounds soon after, her spirit remaining bound to him. Consumed by grief and a desire for vengeance, Parry joins the Church as an inquisitor, a path that gradually exposes him to the influence of a demoness named Lilah, sent to corrupt him and who becomes his consort. Over time this corruption transforms him until he assumes the office of Satan, the Incarnation of Evil, forcing him to navigate his dealings with the other Incarnations and a complicated, long-running connection to a woman named Orb, who is destined for a very different role.

Notes

  • From the series record (Incarnations of Immortality): The original seven-book run, one novel per Incarnation (Death, Time, Fate, War, Nature, Evil, Good), published together as a complete cycle 1983-1990.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
