Synopsis
Set roughly thirty-five years before the events of Promise of Blood, this novella follows Erika ja Leora, a young powder mage living in the northern kingdom of Kez, a country where the practice of magic by commoners is punishable by death. Erika's noble birth is the only thing shielding her from that fate, but she risks losing that protection when she chooses to help a young commoner powder mage who is fleeing for his life after his own abilities are discovered. As she works to smuggle the fugitive to safety in the neighboring nation of Adro, Erika must stay a step ahead of the king's mage hunters and their formidable leader, Duke Nikslaus, all while wrestling with the danger her choice brings down on her own family and position.
