Synopsis
Also set about thirty-five years before Promise of Blood, this novella follows a young Tamas, a commoner rising through the ranks of the Adran army long before he becomes a central figure in the Powder Mage trilogy. After dueling the son of a duke over an insult, Tamas is pulled into the orbit of the nobility and the kingdom's royal sorcerers, and finds himself drawn into a conflict reaching all the way to the highest office in the land. His unlikely ally is Erika, a noblewoman who asks him to teach her the ways of a powder mage in exchange for her help. The story traces how a low-born soldier's skill and ambition begin to entangle him in the political intrigue of a kingdom that has little patience for men of his birth wielding real power.
