Synopsis
Taking place twenty-two years before the events of Promise of Blood, this novella follows Adamat, later a renowned investigator in the Powder Mage trilogy, in his early days as a special detective constable in the city of Adopest. Gifted with a supernatural, perfect memory, Adamat is transferred to the First Precinct and assigned what looks at first like a straightforward case: the murder of a businessman's mistress. As he digs into the killing, the investigation pulls him into a far more dangerous web of political intrigue and hidden conspiracy than he expected, forcing him to rely on his intellect and unusual gift to protect himself and the people around him from powerful enemies who would rather the truth stayed buried.
