Synopsis
In the Aleran Empire, everyone bonds with elemental spirits called furies to gain power over earth, air, fire, water, or metal -- everyone except young Tavi, who has come of age with no furycrafting ability at all. When a missing sheep leads him into the path of a wider conspiracy on the frontier near Calderon Valley, he is drawn together with his aunt Isana, his uncle Bernard, and a Cursor named Amara, a spy for the First Lord investigating treachery among the nobility. As mercenary raiders and a hidden Marat threat converge on the valley, Tavi's ingenuity becomes the group's only advantage against enemies who all outclass him in raw magical power.
