Overview
Jim Butcher's Codex Alera is a closed 6-book epic fantasy series (2004-2009), distinct from his far-better-known urban-fantasy Dresden Files. It follows Tavi of Calderon in a Rome-inspired world where elemental spirits (furies) bond with nearly every inhabitant. Butcher has said the series originated from a challenge to combine two deliberately mismatched ideas, Rome and Pokemon, resulting in a setting where nearly every citizen commands elemental spirits of earth, air, fire, water, wood, or metal, except Tavi, whose complete lack of furycrafting becomes central to his eventual role in the empire's survival. Beginning with Furies of Calderon (2004) and concluding with First Lord's Fury (2009), the series combines Roman-inflected political and military structure with Butcher's fast-paced action writing, and remains a self-contained, completed sequence separate from his ongoing Dresden Files.
