Synopsis
The third book in Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series finds Tavi secretly recruited into a newly formed legion, the First Aleran, which draws its officers and soldiers equally from every city in the realm so that no single noble house can turn it against rivals. Tavi serves undercover as a junior officer, Rufus Scipio, while conducting espionage for the First Lord and helping train the legion's inexperienced ranks. As the First Aleran marches toward the frontier amid rumors of a coming invasion, Tavi must prove that someone without magical furycrafting ability can still command respect and achieve remarkable things through ingenuity, discipline, and hard-won trust from the soldiers under him.
