Synopsis

The fourth book in the Codex Alera series follows Tavi, now a battle-tested captain in the First Aleran legion, as it faces an invading Canim army that has crossed onto Aleran soil. When Tavi discovers that Aleran refugees enslaved by circumstance are fighting alongside the Canim for their own survival rather than as true enemies of the realm, he faces a morally complex command decision that tests his leadership under impossible wartime pressure. Balancing loyalty to his troops, his oath to the crown, and his growing understanding that the Canim may not be the monsters Aleran propaganda has painted them as, Tavi must find a path through the war that does not cost everyone their humanity.
