Synopsis

In the fifth book of the Codex Alera series, Tavi, now publicly recognized as Princeps Gaius Octavian and heir to the Aleran throne, has forged a fragile peace with the Canim, Alera's ancient enemies, and agreed to help guide their fleet home across the sea. During the crossing he discovers that the parasitic, hive-minded Vord have spent three years devastating the Canim homeland, leaving both the stranded Alerans and their former foes with no choice but to fight side by side simply to survive. Cut off from reinforcement and facing a threat unlike anything the Realm has encountered before, Octavian must hold together an uneasy alliance in hostile territory.
