Synopsis
In the second Codex Alera novel, roughly two years after the invasion at Calderon Valley, Tavi has moved to the capital city of Alera Imperia to study at the Academy while serving as an aide in the royal household. Political rivalries among the realm's High Lords intensify as the ailing First Lord, Gaius Sextus, faces open challenges to his authority and questions grow over the succession. Meanwhile, a new threat emerges from the wild Vord, a swarm-based predatory race capable of assimilating the abilities of anything it consumes. Tavi, still lacking furycraft of his own, must again rely on wit and loyalty as danger closes in on both the Academy and the crown.
