Synopsis

Gauntlgrym opens R.A. Salvatore's Neverwinter Saga, set in the North some time after Drizzt Do'Urden's earlier travels. The mercenaries Jarlaxle and Athrogate set out in search of the legendary lost dwarven city of Gauntlgrym, rumored to hold both ancient treasure and a primordial force bound beneath it, while the dwarf king Bruenor pursues the same goal for his own reasons. When Jarlaxle and Athrogate reach the ruins first, their exploration disturbs powers that threaten the ruined city of Neverwinter above, forcing these usually opposed parties toward an uneasy alliance. Drizzt, still grieving losses from earlier in his story, is drawn into the search as its stakes grow beyond simple treasure-hunting. The book sets up a scramble among old friends and uneasy rivals to reach Gauntlgrym's secrets before the danger stirring within it is unleashed on the surface world.
