Synopsis

The Ghost King is the third volume of R.A. Salvatore's Transitions trilogy, opening in the wake of the Spellplague that has ravaged Faerun and left the fate of the barbarian Wulfgar and the dwarf stronghold of Mithral Hall uncertain. A new menace called the Ghost King has arisen, a monstrous fusion born from a blinded dragon, a mind flayer, and the ancient artifact Crenshinibon, seeking vengeance against those who caused its creation. The mercenary Jarlaxle works to bring the drow ranger Drizzt Do'Urden together with the priest Cadderly Bonaduce, whose sanctuary at Spirit Soaring comes under assault from the Ghost King's undead forces. As old companions are drawn back together to face this threat, the danger extends beyond any single hero, touching the magical foundations of the wider Realms and forcing former allies to reunite against an enemy risen from an earlier age.

Notes

  • Transitions #3
  • From the series record (The Legend of Drizzt (author line)): R.A. Salvatore's 40-novel line (1988-2025), incl. The Sellswords; sub-series recorded per book. Continues with Drizzt's daughter (2025-).

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Legend of Drizzt (author line): position 22 of 40: previous The Pirate King (2008) · next Gauntlgrym (2010)
