Synopsis

Two hundred years after the Forbidding was broken, Santhenar has been at war for a century with the lyrinx, intelligent winged predators out of the Void who will do anything to win a world of their own, and despite the mechanical battle clankers and the crystals that drive them, humanity is losing. Tiaan, a naive crystal worker in a clanker manufactory, is experimenting with a new kind of crystal when it wakes in her a latent talent for geomancy, the most powerful and most perilous of the Secret Arts, and she begins to hear a distant young man, Minis, who speaks to her as a friend. Falsely accused of sabotage by her rival Irisis, she flees for her life, stalked by Ryll, an outcast wingless lyrinx who wants her for his flesh-forming sorcery, and follows her visions to Tirthrax, the tallest peak on the Three Worlds.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Well of Echoes): The second Three Worlds quartet, set some two centuries after The View from the Mirror: Santhenar at war with the lyrinx, winged predators from the Void, fought with crystal-driven clankers; the crystal-worker and geomancer Tiaan, the apprentice spy Nish, the artisan Irisis and the scrutator Xervish Flydd. Book three is published in the United States and in later editions as Scrutator.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
