Synopsis

The Aachim have come to Santhenar through the opening Tiaan made, with an irresistible fleet of battle constructs, and their embittered leader, Vithis, demands half the world as the price of peace. Santhenar, on its knees after a hundred years of war with the lyrinx, is in no position to refuse, but even if the Council of Scrutators gives way, nothing seems likely to satisfy Vithis's thirst for vengeance. Tiaan, feeling utterly betrayed by the voice that led her to Tirthrax, is hunted through the abandoned Aachim city by Nish, the scrutator's apprentice spy, who burns at her rejection of his advances, blames her for the invasion and has sworn to redeem himself by bringing her to justice. Her geomancy, meanwhile, holds the key to a power that could save humanity or destroy it, and every faction on the world wants her for it.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Well of Echoes): The second Three Worlds quartet, set some two centuries after The View from the Mirror: Santhenar at war with the lyrinx, winged predators from the Void, fought with crystal-driven clankers; the crystal-worker and geomancer Tiaan, the apprentice spy Nish, the artisan Irisis and the scrutator Xervish Flydd. Book three is published in the United States and in later editions as Scrutator.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
