Synopsis
The allies are trapped on Mistmurk Mountain and the God-Emperor guards every way out. Their one chance of freedom is for young Maelys to confess to a crime she has not committed, though doing so will turn all her friends against her. Even if they escape through the perilous shadow realm, Jal-Nish's armies will hunt them to the ends of the world, so Nish, the old sorcerer Flydd and Maelys have no choice but to go to the Tower of a Thousand Steps on the frozen Isle of Noom, to seek the help of the implacable Numinator, who controlled the world for a hundred and fifty years for an unknown and terrible purpose. On that tragic journey they uncover a greater and deadlier secret: a folly that has shaped life and death across the Three Worlds for more than three thousand years and now threatens to consume them all.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
