Synopsis

After ten years of servitude in the darkest prison of his father, the maimed God-Emperor Jal-Nish Hlar, Nish is about to be released. Jal-Nish holds the two sorcerous quicksilver tears, Gatherer and Reaper, and with them controls all of the Secret Art; every opposition has been crushed, and he has begun to remake the world in his own depraved image. The oppressed peoples of Santhenar see Nish as a messianic figure, the Deliverer, because as he was dragged off to prison a decade earlier he wildly promised to return and cast his father down. But Nish is powerless and has no allies, and Jal-Nish wants him as his lieutenant, as corrupt as himself, offering him everything he ever desired; faced with the alternative of another ten years in prison, Nish is not sure he can resist. Published in Australia as Torments of the Traitor.

The first book was originally published in Australia as Torments of the Traitor.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Song of the Tears: position 1 of 3: next The Curse on the Chosen (2007)
  • Internal chronology, within The Three Worlds Cycle: position 3 of 15: previous Geomancer (2001) · next The Summon Stone (2016)
