Synopsis

Originally written as a chapter for The Illearth War before being cut from that novel, this short work follows two of the Lords of Revelstone and their Bloodguard escort as they travel to Coercri, the home of the Giants, after receiving disturbing reports about their old allies. Their journey takes them through the perilous Grimmerdhore Forest, where they encounter a series of dangerous creatures native to the Land. Stephen R. Donaldson removed the sequence from the main novel because he felt a long expedition happening away from the protagonist would weaken the book's focus, leaving the outcome of the Giants' fate to be related secondhand by a character later in the series. Published separately, the story fills in an otherwise offstage episode from early in the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

Notes

  • Depicts an episode cut from The Illearth War for length/POV reasons; chronologically set during that book's timeframe despite publishing four years later. Collected in Daughter of Regals and Other Tales (1984).

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (standalone work): position 5 of 11: previous The Wounded Land (1980) · next The One Tree (1982)
