Synopsis

In The One Tree, Thomas Covenant and Linden Avery set out from the restored city of Revelstone by sea, accompanied by Haruchai guards and the Giants First and Pitchwife, in search of the One Tree, the source of the wood from which the original Staff of Law was carved. They hope a new Staff can heal what the Sunbane has done to the Land, and their voyage carries them beyond its borders into strange seas and toward the powerful, unpredictable Elohim, whose aid may prove essential to the quest. Along the way Covenant wrestles with the violence and moral compromises the Sunbane forces on everyone who tries to survive it, while Linden confronts her own fear of the corrupting power she senses growing within herself.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
