Overview
Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant follows a leprosy-afflicted, morally compromised protagonist transported to the magical Land, across three sub-series spanning 1977 to 2013: the First Chronicles (a trilogy), the Second Chronicles (a trilogy), and the Last Chronicles (a quartet), ten novels in total. Thomas Covenant, disbelieving his own experience in the Land and refusing to act as its prophesied saviour, nonetheless becomes entangled in its wars against the corrupting Lord Foul across decades of the Land's internal history while barely aging himself between visits. The opening volume, Lord Foul's Bane (1977), was famously rejected by dozens of publishers before finding a home, and the series is often credited with helping open commercial epic fantasy to morally ambiguous, unheroic protagonists in the years after Tolkien's mainstream success. Donaldson continued writing in the Land as recently as 2013's The Last Dark.

Resolution of a genuine cross-source discrepancy: Wikipedia's own pages disagree internally on the years of The Illearth War and The Power That Preserves (variously 1977/1978/1979); the database follows archive.org's independent catalog metadata and the SF Encyclopedia (both giving 1977 for all three First Chronicles volumes, Holt, Rinehart and Winston), treating the 1978/1979 variants as UK-edition dates conflated with the US first edition. Expanded = Gilden-Fire (1981 novella, chronologically set during The Illearth War's timeframe despite its later publication). The trilogy-level awards (BFA 1979, WFA 1978, Balrog 1979) are recorded against the first book of each trilogy with an explicit note that they were awarded to the trilogy collectively, not the single volume.
