Synopsis

The Illearth War brings Thomas Covenant back to the Land roughly forty years later by its own reckoning, though for him almost no time has passed since his first visit. Summoned again by the Council, he finds that Lord Foul has spent the interval building a formidable army around the corrupted illearth stone, while High Lord Elena, daughter of a woman Covenant once knew, leads a fragile alliance of Lords, Giants, Bloodguard and Ranyhyn in a desperate defense of the Land. He is joined by Hile Troy, a blind outsider from his own world who has taken command of the Land's forces, and by loyal companions determined to hold back Foul's advance. Covenant, still refusing to accept the Land as real, is drawn deeper into a war whose consequences feel undeniable around him.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
