Synopsis
Grass for His Pillow picks up in the aftermath of Across the Nightingale Floor, following two separate paths that will eventually converge. Kaede, recovering from a lengthy magical sleep brought on by the previous novel's events, returns to her family's ancestral domain determined to rebuild it and secure her own position despite having little support and many rivals eager to see her fail. Takeo, meanwhile, is taken in by the Tribe, the secretive organization tied to his birth father, and finds himself effectively held captive while being trained in their formidable, near-supernatural skills, all while wrestling with his desire to avenge Lord Shigeru's death and to claim leadership of the Otori clan he was adopted into.
