Synopsis

Ever since she was struck by lightning as a young teenager, Harper Connelly has been able to sense where the dead lie and to relive their last moments, and she has turned the gift into a strange profession, finding bodies for a fee, with her protective stepbrother Tolliver Lang as her manager. Hired to look for a missing teenage girl in Sarne, a small town in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas, Harper finds the body and learns how she died, but the town wants neither the truth nor the people who brought it. As she and Tolliver are kept from leaving, they find themselves caught in a tangle of lies and further murders among the townspeople.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
