Synopsis

The sixth Harry Potter novel begins as Voldemort's return becomes public knowledge and his Death Eaters wage open war on the wizarding world. Dumbledore persuades the retired Potions master Horace Slughorn to return to Hogwarts. In his sixth year, Harry receives private lessons from Dumbledore exploring Voldemort's past through memories viewed in a Pensieve, from his childhood in an orphanage to his early interest in Horcruxes, objects that hold fragments of a soul, and Dumbledore asks Harry to obtain a crucial memory from Slughorn. Meanwhile an old textbook once owned by a mysterious student calling himself the Half-Blood Prince helps Harry excel in Potions class. Harry grows suspicious that his rival Draco Malfoy is secretly carrying out a dangerous task for Voldemort, while his feelings for Ginny Weasley develop.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
