Synopsis

The fifth Harry Potter novel opens in the summer, when Harry drives off two Dementors that attack him and his cousin Dudley. Members of the Order of the Phoenix, a secret resistance organization founded by Dumbledore to fight Voldemort, bring him to its headquarters in his godfather Sirius Black's house at Grimmauld Place. He begins his fifth year under a cloud of suspicion from the Ministry of Magic, which under Cornelius Fudge refuses to believe Voldemort has returned and discredits Harry and Dumbledore in the press. The Ministry installs Dolores Umbridge as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher and later as High Inquisitor, banning practical magic, so Harry and his friends secretly form a defense group at Hogwarts. Harry also suffers recurring dreams of a locked corridor.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
