Synopsis

In the winter of 1862 Adelaide McKee, a former prostitute, arrives on the London doorstep of the veterinarian John Crawford, a man she met once seven years earlier; their brief meeting produced a child who, until now, had been presumed dead. The girl is threatened by the vampiric ghost of John Polidori, Lord Byron's former physician and the late uncle of the poet Christina Rossetti and her brother, the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, on whose family Christina unwittingly brought his curse when she was fourteen. The Rossettis join forces with Crawford and McKee against Polidori, who is plotting with ancient vampiric forces, in a story that sweeps from high society to grimy slums and the pre-Roman catacombs beneath St Paul's.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
