Synopsis

Early in the nineteenth century, the doctor Michael Crawford wakes to find his bride brutally murdered beside him in their wedding bed and, doubting his own sanity, flees England. He becomes aware that he is pursued by a lamia, a malignant female spirit that claims him as her own and will not rest until she destroys all that he cherishes. He seeks help from the greatest poets of his day, Byron, Keats and Shelley, who turn out to have experience of such monsters, and his quest to escape his supernatural wife carries him across the Continent in the company of those doomed poets, each of whom has a part to play in his fate and in the fate of Europe.
