Synopsis

Homeland, the fourth book by internal chronology of The Legend of Drizzt but the fourth published, tells the origin story of Drizzt Do'Urden, born the third son of the noble House Do'Urden in the underground drow city of Menzoberranzan. Marked for ritual sacrifice to the spider goddess Lolth as an unneeded third son, Drizzt is spared only when his eldest brother is killed in his place, and he grows up training as a warrior at Menzoberranzan's military academy alongside his House's weaponmaster and father, Zaknafein, who secretly shares his son's private doubts about drow society. Raised within a culture that prizes cruelty, betrayal, and unquestioning devotion to Lolth, Drizzt increasingly finds himself at odds with the expectations placed on him by his mother, Matron Malice, and siblings, as his innate compassion sets him on a collision course with everything Menzoberranzan demands of its own.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Legend of Drizzt (author line): position 4 of 40: previous The Halfling's Gem (1990) · next Exile (1990)
