Synopsis
Thera, a reluctant prophet who can see into the future, fought alongside Ashok Vadal and his company, the Sons of the Black Sword, until a shapeshifting wizard who covets her gift of foresight carried her off. Now she is his prisoner in the House of Assassins, a stronghold of killers for hire, and the visions sent by the forgotten gods have only grown stronger. Ashok, a fugitive from the Law he once enforced and hunted by his former brothers among the Protectors, sets out to free her, while in the Capitol the Grand Inquisitor schemes to turn the casteless rebellion to his own ends. The second novel of the saga mixes court intrigue, brutal swordplay and dark humour, and questions what belief is worth and what it costs to give power to those who prey on the weak.
